Reflection on China's dilemma

During our recent CID lessons, we learnt about the economy of China. This is our reflections on China's dilemma between pursuing higher economic growth and escalating pollution due to the industrialisation.

Jean: It is known that China has an unprecedented economic growth over the last two decades as they open up their country to international trade and welcome foreign investors to invest in the country. Due to China's large population, it is important for them to create huge levels of growth in order to create as many jobs as possible for their citizens. However, because of their rapid industrialisation, they have to deal with the escalating pollution. As the world's most populous country with 1.3 billion citizens, China has to create many jobs for their people, thus more industrialisation. China has a total landmass of 3 854 082 square miles of landmass, resulting in them having a lot of land space for factories and more industrialisation. Their corporate tax is also one of the lowest in the world thus many foreign investors are attracted to the country to do business. All these factors contribute to the escalating pollution alongside the economic growth and I feel that the pollution in this case cannot be helped. Moreover, China is still considered a developing country so they cannot afford more green technology than other developed countries. In 2010, China contributes 26% to the world's total carbon dioxide emissions and I think that China should at least invest more in green technology in order to reduce pollution as the pollution contributes to global warming, a factor which is affecting everyone. They should do their part in reducing pollution!

Gabbie: i feel that China should help the world and reduce the pollution as they are one of the countries which contributes to the most pollution in the world. As pollution harms the world such as global warming, everyone should try to do their part to reduce it to have a better environment. As China is one of the countries that contributes to the most pollution as their economic grows maybe they can invest more in technology that helps reduce pollution.if pollution is not reduce, soon many disasters will happen then and we will no longer be able to do anything to save the world and save ourselves so we should take the chance now and do something  to reduce pollution.

Petra : i personally feel that no matter how much it affects their economy, the should try to reduce pollution as no matter how much their economy boosts there is no use if the earth is destroyed due to impact pollution has on the enviroment. If the earth is destroyed what is the point of having a strong country when in the end everyone dies. The end is the same. They should focus more on how to reduce pollution ensuring the survival of many generations to come!

Yixiang: I feel that china should cut down on the pollution and focus on how to save earth instead of pursuing higher economic growth. If they do not cut down on the pollution, earth would be destroyed sooner or later. When the earth is destroyed, all their hard work of pursuing higher economic growth would be wasted. They should spare a thought for the later generation. Hence, I feel that china should reduce the pollution and not focus on pursuing higher economic growth so as to save the earth and allow human beings to exist.

Kai Ming: Pollution is a definite thing and the Earth's destruction is also definite. The only thing we can do  about it is to cut down the amount of pollution we give. China has the world's largest population, it will have a significantly higher pollution amount. More people leads to more jobs and hence the need to build more factories and hence more pollution things in the air. China would want to be the best in every aspect of being a country but china cannot have the best of both world's. By expanding their industries and making a growth in their economy, less money is spent on research to help reduce the pollution in china. This case, china would have a polluted yet highly advances society. The difference between a dead millionaire and a healthy beggar is huge. In this case, china would be better off using money to save the environment rather than become technological advanced.
