Reflections on presentation

Jean : We were among the first few groups to present for the Chingay presentation and I personally felt that we were quite unprepared, we did not actually spent much time rehearsing and thus our performance was not very good. However, after this presentation I have learnt a lot more on presentation skills; such as having to be loud, clear, very confident, not too serious or too unserious and also crystal clear of when I have to speak and whatever I'm presenting. I think that I have definitely learnt a lot from these tips on presenting and that I am enjoying presenting much more. Overall I had quite a fun time presenting and I believe that these tips and presentation skills will help me in my future presentations!

Petra : I think that this experience was fruitful. I had a fun time doing up the slides for the presentation the next day. To be honest our group did not prepare very early and we did it quite last minute. I learnt that we should always prepare a head of time so we have time to rehearse and so we each know what to say and when to say to avoid confusion and ensure that the presentation runs fluently. I also realized that my eyes tend to look at all directions while presenting and i would like to work on that so i can appear more confident. Most important thing while presenting would be confidence and eye contact. With both of these the speaker will be able to capture and hold the attention of the audience. This was indeed a fulfilling experience and one of the few times i really put quite some effort into a presentation!

Yi Xiang: I think that our presentation is up to standard and is quite good. We were not prepared when we had to present our slides, we only had a short period of time to practice and rehearse with my group members. Due to this , during our presentation most of our group members were feeling very nervous including me. After this presentation, I learnt that we should not leave everything to the last minute but instead prepare ahead of time. I also learnt that during presentations, we must project our voice, have eye contact and be confident. I realized that during the presentation, I would always walk around, not being able to stand still. This may be caused by nervousness. I would work on it and improve the next time I present. This was indeed a good experience for my group members and I.

Gabbie: i think that this presentation was actually quite good thanks to our group members' hard work of making the slides and script, we did tried to make it a good presentation. Our group kinda did our preparation a bit late so we didn't have time to rehearse with others so on the presentation day, the presentation didn't run so smoothly but i still think our group did great! I learnt that we should always try to attract the attention of the audience because they get bored very easily like me as i have short attention span so once i can't hear someone speaking very clearly or its a very long paragraph of words on the slides i just zoom out so i think we should always think on this point of attracting the audience or no one would be listening. This was indeed a great experience of learning presentation skills and it was comfortable as it was our classmates who are people we have known for a year.

Kai Ming: I felt that the slides of the presentation were great but our presentation lacked practice. As stated by the audience, the boys, me and Yi Xiang, were walking around during the presentation which was really distracting. This leads me to my next point of not capturing the audience's attention because it was not interesting enough and did not intrigued the audience. However, we have receive tips and ways to improve and will defintely not make our same mistakes again. This was defintely a good experience to have because not many people can get a chance to present about chingay. To a class. Without practice. And with great slides.

Chinese New Year Reflections

Jean: The colour that I will use to describe chinese new year is definitely red of course! It's like the colour of prosperity and that's when all the houses start to get more red from all the decorations!!! The symbol I chose is  春 but upside down. It means spring, one of the four seasons. And as CNY is known as the Spring Festival, this symbol signifies the arrival of the Spring festival as flipping it upside down means '春 到' and I find this very meaningful!

Of course, it's a red packet! Chinese New Year is the period that I will feel extremely happy because of red packets aka the angbaos because I could get lots of money and buy some of my favourite stuff!

Gabbie: Chinese New Year!! :)
One colour that i would use to describe CNY would definitely be red, who wouldn't think of red during CNY, everywhere you go will be filled with red designs and decorations which really makes you feel the New Year spirit! One symbol i would use is the 福字, i think its really meaningful as they put it upside down so it would be "福到" so you would see it almost in every house.

And one image that i would use for CNY is of course.... FOOD!! I really loveeeeeeee the new year goodies but its so fattening! :( so i couldn't eat much of it which was so sad! I won't be able to really enjoy CNY without the goodies :):)( My love for food!!!)

Yixiang:For me, Chinese New Year is a time for me to visit my relatives in Johor, Malaysia, and send the festive season with them. As all of us are busy, we hardly time for a family reunion with my relatives. It is also time for me to eat delicacies that are not found after Chinese New Year. My favorite snack is still the pineapple tarts. It's sweet and nice. I also get lots of red packets from my relatives and feel very happy. I hope that the school will extend the holiday so that I could visit my relatives that are living in Penang.

Kaiming: Chinese New Year was a fun time for me. I went visiting a usual and ate a lot too. What I really liked was how the school supported Chinese New Year with the many activities planned for us. We had to design our class according to Chinese New Year which was a great experience for classmates to bond. We also had Chinese New Year celebrations/concert. The many performances left us with mouths open and hands clapping. Many classes, CCAs and other groups of students also gathered together to 捞余生. Friends visited each other's classes as well which was a fun experience for me. I really applaud the school for making an effort to help support Chinese New Year.

Petra: One color that I would use to describe Chinese New Year is red! According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian. Nian would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year and believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. Once, people saw the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red, they then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red. Hence, every time when New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and spring scroll on windows and doors. We see red all over during Chinese New Year, in our clothing as well as our decorations and even our Ang pao! Thus the color I would use to describe Chinese New Year is red!

One symbol I would use to describe Chinese New Year is this symbol of a dragon simply because I was born in the year of the dragon!

One imagine I would use to describe Chinese New Year is this picture of family. I believe Chinese New Year is all about spending more happy and fun times with family and relatives. For me, my family is what makes Chinese New Year so special every year! I also think that without Chinese New Year we might not even meet up with certain relatives so this is a good opportunity to do so!

Consolidation on learning

Petra: Consolidation of Learning
After going through the previous lessons, I have learnt to view things with a more open mind and wider perspective. Do not judge a book by its cover. To understand how to think deeper and look beyond just what is on the surface. Also, it also taught us about observing our surroundings and to find reasons to support our observations. Words are deceiving, but so are pictures. During class when Mr Chua reviewed certain pictures my observations and assumptions were different from the truth. I only looked at the surface and immediately gave my opinion without giving deeper thought into it. And for the latest lesson, I took note of certain points on how to make a good presentation. It requires confidence, preparation, eye contact and much more. We learn about non academic related stuff and it questions our thinking. Overall CID lessons are really one of the most interesting and fun lesson we have. The teacher really engages in the lesson and the class will always have certain comments that make me laugh all the time! All this makes the learning experience an enjoyable one!

Gabbie: Consolidation of Learning
Over the past few lessons, i have learnt how to observe pictures more in depth, learnt that there are many stories behind pictures and how meaningful they are. Honestly i have never thought that pictures can have so many different stories, i mean its just a picture, people probably won't even look at it seriously so i was amazed by the photo Kevin Carter took about the child and the vulture. Kevin Carter must have been really upset with himself for not being able to help the child, knowing his story makes the picture yet even more meaningful. It was an interesting lesson that i really enjoyed and i hope to have even more interesting lessons!!

Jean: Consolidation of Learning
Throughout the past few lessons, I have learnt a lot from these lessons such as thinking, observation and reflecting skills, but personally i have learnt that we should not judge a book by its cover. I think it is very true that a picture speaks a thousand words, and from the pictures I could learn about everything behind it. felt that I was too quick to judge about the beggars in the picture. In both the 2 pictures of the beggars, I even thought that the woman with the child was a real beggar! From that lesson I have learnt to think in depth and also not to judge a book by its cover. I think it is important to also think out of the box and that will help with my learning process and what to reflect on in the blog. I have learnt a lot from the past few lessons and I also think that all the CID lessons were very interesting and I am looking forward to every lesson!

Kaiming: Consolidation of learning
From the few lessons that I've gonna through, I learnt a lot from the many stories that our teachers has shared with us. I've learnt about finding the hidden and true meaning about the photos or the evidence and not to judge a book by its cover and not to only look at the surface of the story. The stories really let us think through and link the story to our life. The story about poverty made us think about poverty in Singapore. Even though poverty isn't a big problem in Singapore, it is still a big problem in many other countries and we need to know about it for a better understanding of the world. I really like these lessons and I really hope to have more!

Yixiang: Consolidation of learning
I learnt how to think in depth, out of the box rather than just on the surface. I have also learnt not to judge a book by its cover from the previous few lessons. A picture tells a thousand words, we need to think deeper to understand how they feel. For example, the beggar on the streets was begging for money because his trolley, which was needed for his job, was stolen. So he was begging on the streets so he could buy a new trolley to resume work. While the woman in the next picture, was deceiving the guy reading newspaper for money and the child she was carrying did not belong to her. Thus, we should not judge a book by its cover. I also learnt presentation skills from the previous lessons like maintaining eye contact with the audience. I really enjoyed the lessons and hope it would be more interesting in weeks to come.
