China's One Child Policy

Jean: The one-child policy is a population control policy of China, introduced in 1979 to alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems. In 2007, approximately 35.9% of China's population was subject to a one-child restriction. However, this policy has a caused numerous negative social consequences in China, raising many concerns. There was an increase in forced abortion, (female) infanticide and underreporting of female births (which could have possibly resulted in the sex imbalance). In China provinces, the people who broke the one child policy were fined heavily and the penalty is almost always several times a worker’s average annual income, making it extremely expensive to break the policy. But I feel that sometimes these births are just inevitable. In the poorer families, the female must abort the baby in order to not pay the fine. Also, if they really had a baby, some of them might just dump the baby away (especially if it is a girl) and this is just cruel to the young innocent lives. In the families with only 1 child, the child will get spoilt by their parents too since he/she is the only child they can have. It might also cause poor social communication and cooperation skills among the new generation, as they have no siblings at home.

Kai Ming: the one-child policy is a way of making sure that the population of china does not increase too rapidly. China is a big country and has a big population but due to the fact that there are not enough number of jobs and stuff, china has made the one-child policy to affect the population. I feel that the one-child policy is really unfair because it restricts the freedom of having a big family. This has caused many people to migrate to other countries because they want to have a big family and have more than one child. Daughters that are born are also thrown away because Chinese like boys more than girls and they would rather have a son than a daughter. The one-child policy causes them to abandon the daughter in order to get a son. This is cruel and horrible.

Yixiang: the one child policy is a way of controlling the population in china so that it doesn't increase rapidly. There are not enough jobs in china for the whole population of china. The one child policy is to ensure that people are not out of jobs and have money to support their family. Due to the one child policy, many parents kill their children after birth so that they won't be caught having a second child. They have many cruel ways to kill the child eg. flushing them down the toilet bowl. I feel that china should abolish the one child policy as many innocent lives are killed. Even though china wants to lower the birth rate but I feel that this is not the right way.

Gabbie: i feel that the one-child policy in China is kind of sad as the child will not have any siblings to play with at home and if the parents are working they will have to spend a lot of time alone. Even though this controls the population in China but i do not think that this brings in a lot of positive effects. People with a second child will be heavily fined thus they will find ways to dump the baby or get an abortion i feel that this is cruel as it cannot be prevented. Even though it is a baby it is still a human life, i find it sad that people can dump their baby so easily leaving them to die, its not their choice to be brought into the world so adults should take responsibility for them, i hope this kind of cruel action will decrease.

Petra : I feel that the one policy is not good nor bad. With a one child policy it will control the Chinese population and will benefit China in the long run. Looking at it in the government's point of view i think it is a wise decision, however for the people it is something sad. The limit has been strongly enforced in urban towns, but the actual implementation varies from location to location. In most rural areas, families are allowed to apply to have a second child if their first-born is a daughter or suffers from physical disability, mental illness, or intellectual disability. Second children are subject to birth spacing (usually 3 or 4 years). Additional children will result in large fines. Families violating the policy are required to pay monetary penalties and may possibly be denied bonuses at their workplace. Also, According to a report by the National Population and Family Planning Commission, there will be 30 million more men than women in 2020. This is due to the preference of having a son as a son is able to carry the family name. This means that in the future, men in china will have fewer brides. Since most of the families in China prefer a male son, females often get abandoned, live in orphanages and get put up for adoption. I feel that this is unfair towards the female children as it was not their choice to be born female. For those who did not get adopted by other families, they would have to live their life in the orphanage, not getting much opportunities in life, which is rather sad. The one child policy also causes MOST children to have no siblings. Eventually, the only ones who stick with us through life is our siblings and without siblings we'll be left alone in this world. When the child grows up, he will not have someone he can constantly depend on no matter what, because as much as we don't like to say it, friends come and go. Thus the child will be lonely. And for future generations, the family tree will be rather small and children of the one child will not have cousins at all,or relatives and family gatherings will be plain and boring with only a few people to spend time with. If anything unfortunate happens to the child's parents, they would not have anyone to depend on as they would not have relatives. I therefore think that in the long run, this would definitely affect China in the long run in my opinion the one child policy should cease.
